My wife can’t understand why I play these games instead of my new PC games or PS3…I don’t think she truly understands the awesome mechanic, great puzzle aspect, and just absolute replayability.

That said, it’s the 4th and you said in Twitter CW3 would be out today. I am disappointed…and jonesing for more than the demo!!!

TYVM for the demo! Enjoying every (sometimes confusing) minute. In my defense, I have to take a lot of pain meds, so I have a right to be confused. lol

I have a very old desktop pc. I think I may have to purchase another memory stick when the complete game comes out… But I digress.

That was such a fricken tease…

Not sure i like how the creeper acts in this game :/ I was noticing it doesn’t fall back into its hole when blasted down with mortars and stuff. Im sure if it wasn’t 1am almost i could explain what i mean a little better.

It just seemed to take longer for the creeper to retreat so to speak after taking out multiple chunks at a time with mortars. Usually if you blast away the deeper layers of creep the top layers would fall in on them selves kinda?
Now it doesn’t do that as quickly i had to actually circle around to really blast it back into its place.

Not a bad thing, just a little different. Fricken amazing game tho. I didnt want it to end :*(

    1. Michionlion
      Michionlion October 3, 2013 at 10:09 am |

Actually, it is probably because you were viewing it from a much larger viewpoint. Creeper flow math hasn’t changed much at all.

      1. WhoJaWack
        WhoJaWack October 3, 2013 at 2:06 pm |

Actually, I was in fact not watching it from a much larger view but thanks anyways.

Ill have to screenshot it or record it so you can see what im talking about. Ive never seen Creeper stay on the highest level after the rest is being blown to kingdom come.

Just to make sure im not crazy im going to replay some CW1 but im positive it never stayed on the higher ground when it was being blown up at a lower level.

In this case it was creeper coming up in a bowl shape and i blew clear to the bottom on 3 sides of it and the back side did not sink back down into itself.

Wasn’t a bad thing just different

        1. BuckyBall
          BuckyBall October 4, 2013 at 2:12 am |

I noticed the flow effect as well. I didn’t mind through, it meant using a slightly different strategy. It was as if the creeper had more viscosity. Maybe it is a setting that can be changed between levels – where on some it sticks like glue but on others it rapidly flows like water.

I also noticed that the blaster was not as quick to clear the creeper away.

          1. BuckyBall
            BuckyBall October 4, 2013 at 2:15 am |

Just had a thought that the viscosity is the result of a change in tick speed. The whole game plays slower at the slowest (default) speed setting.

Gonna take a break from it for at least today if not tomorrow… really wanna kick this bug, not encourage it xD

But seriously… the music matches the game PERFECTLY. It matched everything in the game, every battle song with any level, the sector map music with the story elements, and even the menu music is amazing 😀

    Hello Virgil !
Would you care for some constructive feedback regarding the game demo ? 🙂

    – Moving our ship from one planet to another should NOT be done in a straight line. It would simply make more sense to do it in a circular motion. Gravitation pulls, all that. That’s a typical shattering of the immersion feeling (in literary terms, it breaks our willing suspension of disbelief, one may say).

    – WASD keys to move on the map : brilliant ! … That is, as long as we’re using a Qwerty keyboard, otherwise this turns out useless 😉
In my case, on my french Azerty keyboard, for instance, A and Q, W and Z are switched, compared to Qwerty. So these shortcuts become useless.
If that’s not asking too much additional coding, I’d recommend mapping the five main beyboard layouts, there’s not just Qwerty in your customer base. Or, aren’t there libraries to automatically take that into account ?

    – A suggestion, that when we hover our mouse over game commands, a text bubble shows up to tell what is the keyboard shortcut for this. For instance, when I wanted to destroy units and found the W key didn’t work (oh, maybe I should have tried my Z key, Qwerty–Azerty, hmmm…), I had to click Destroy with my mouse instead, and I was disappointed there was no bubble to tell me what was the proper keyboard shortcut…

    – I remember in CWII, I would frequently right-click an empty space in order to “release” my left click’s selection. Here, that doesn’t work, I have to hit Escape to stop my left click from being made to build something on the map, so that I may select a ground unit and give it orders. It would be cool to have the right-click-in-empty-space-equals-Escape feature back, you know us CW players are hardcore about doing things faster, even if it’s a quarter of a second gain 🙂

      Nova October 3, 2013 at 8:00 am |

Well, all your problems are already solved: Just click on settings and then “keys”. You can change any key there, even make a right click deselect the structure. 😉

    2. Cohiba
      Cohiba October 3, 2013 at 8:02 am |

He already has a solution for your key issue. From the main screen, toward the bottom click settings, then click the keys tab, then scroll down and select the keys that work for you 🙂 Play on!!

    3. Kharnellius
      Kharnellius October 3, 2013 at 8:08 am |

I thought you could rebind keys. Virgil said it was going to be possible (maybe not in demo?)

As for the right click recommendation…I would agree that that sounds annoying!

      1. JF-T
        JF-T October 3, 2013 at 12:25 pm |

It is possible to do in all implementations of CW3 save of course for most likely most beta and all alpha versions of the game. Also remember that the key bindings will stay and work in the demo and the full game, since they are one and the same but one needs a serial to play.
That is my Great and Powerful theory!

  31. Oliver
    Oliver October 3, 2013 at 5:54 am |

    Ah, more constructive feedback 🙂

    – At first, when clicking an unknown item on the map, I couldn’t find what it was. The things I would notice at once, in big letters and in colors, were DEACTIVATE, DISARM, CANCEL, MENU.
It took a while to notice “Tech: REACTOR”, or, even worse because there were no capitals at all, “Shield Key”.
How about a little text balloon hovering above those items on the world map ?

    – Isn’t there a keyboard shortcut to choose how fast time skips ? That’d be awesome 😀

    – Zooming in and out. I think it gives off a bad vibe that we can zoom out so much that the whole view of the scene is only half of the screen surface surrounded by a violet-shaded view of outside space. Maybe capping how much one can zoom out ?

    – I just saw the keyboard shortcuts menu. So much for some of the remarks I made previously.
But, still : about the right click, could it be made that a single right click cancels, while a mouse movement with the right click moves the map ?

    – It would be great if the keyboard shortcuts menu could be eigher larger by default (higher, to be accurate), or was resizable : there are LOTS of keyboard shorcuts entries listed, and scrolling takes MANY times the windows’s height.
At least, a UI note, up and down arrows in the scrollbar on the right of the keyboard shortcuts, it’s too easy to scroll down too much when we click-and-move inside this scroll bar.

    – That was disorientating, so to say. We open the Menu, change some stuff, click Apply… And the menu window still shows.
I think it would feel more “normal” if the menu dialogue would close itself after we click apply…

    – when we do a quicksave, there should be a text shown on screen to confirm the save was done. Otherwise everybody is going to spam control-C to make sure 😉

But I find the UI very small in 1680×1050, making things hard to read for me.

  35. ~~
    ~~ October 3, 2013 at 7:03 am |

Just saying, if you’re using the 64 bit version of the game and are getting an error about “mono.dll”, be sure to download this package:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/confirmation.aspx?id=14632

And Virgil, you should probably include this somehow into the game, because people might run into this problem.

  36. Oliver
    Oliver October 3, 2013 at 8:05 am |

That will be my final constructive criticism line, whether we’re in the Weapons, Structure or others menus, the left-side list of these menus stays of the same color. IMO, when we’re in the Weapons menu, the “Weapons” term should be somehow highlighted with a brighter background color. See the idea ?

And now I’m done with the demo.

VIRGIL Y NO TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY ? I’m eager to get the full game now, congratulations already 🙂

  37. Nova
    Nova October 3, 2013 at 8:07 am |

The game is great, just like Creeper World 1.
But i want to say one thing: Please be very careful with the story. All people (without abraxis) from CW2 are dead (?) and that has to be explained. Another question: Why do we have to flee from every planet? In the first game, we could not destroy the creeper, so we had to flee, in the second game we did retake every planet from the creeper with the nullifier, but why run in this game? Why not just camp on one planet, build massive reactor farms and destroy all emitters? It would be great to get this explained in one mission (like Abraxis saying “screw anything, i stay on this planet.” and then giant amounts of spores appear. ^^)

Will the game be translatable? There are enough fans who would gladly like to translate the game for you (like me in german).

    1. ~~
      ~~ October 3, 2013 at 8:30 am |

      *POTENTIAL SPOILERS FROM THE DEMO*

Because you want to discover the truth and beat the creeper once for all, not settle on one planet. The story clearly mentions that any kind of civilizations that attempted settling down have fallen one way or another, so there is no point in bunkering on a planet knowing that creeper still exists as it always finds a way to destroy you.

      1. ~~
        ~~ October 3, 2013 at 8:33 am |

        *MORE SPOILERS*

Besides, after Abraxis asked if the structures that deny you from warping (forgot name, duh) were made by the creeper, the computer mentioned that wasn’t the case, ending the conversation. That means not only creeper wants humans destroyed, which makes settling down even more dangerous due to espionage.

    2. me_me_me
      me_me_me October 3, 2013 at 8:48 pm |

The reason is partially the same you didn’t just cap an emitter in game #1 and stay on the planet. Those emitters are just remnants of what actually attacked the planets. When a planet is invaded by the creeper amounts similar to what you see on Loki in the first game would be what would assault the planet and don’t forgot these likely can just appear anywhere including right on your city.

  39. Parmeisan
    Parmeisan October 3, 2013 at 8:38 am |

    Hey,

Enjoying it so far. Here’s a thing you should look at, though: either there ought to be a way to claim victory after choosing to keep playing, or that way ought to be more apparent.

    Looking forward to more. Cheers!

PS. While I’m here, I suppose I could mention the typo “the ships automated sensor systems” in the first level. (It should be “the ship’s”.) 🙂

    1. Selvek
      Selvek October 4, 2013 at 1:03 am |

If you keep playing instead of “claiming victory” you will win if you just quit the level normally… but you’ll still get a (somewhat irrelevant) warning about it saving the game as you quit.

      1. Toes
        Toes October 20, 2013 at 9:56 am |

This doesn’t work for me. it keeps saying I need the key for the next planet – in this case Seedet to Flick. Not a problem now as I can just quickly replay the level, but later in the game after spending a long time on each level…….

I hope you can change the windows installer to use a modern file browser, so I can use all the nice improvemnts M$ made since the win98 one. I know this is only a minor annoyance, but I keep getting annoyed by many of these, I don’t know why M$ does provide the old one at all and does not re-route the call to the newer version.

    1. hybird607
      hybird607 October 3, 2013 at 12:59 pm |

One more note: Even if I have a map zoomed out so I can see it all, when I try to select something from the bottom bar, my mouse touching the bottom makes the map scroll. That’s kinda annoying.

    1. Kurt Werle
      Kurt Werle October 3, 2013 at 3:28 pm |

Yeah, there are a couple of minor annoyances with scrolling and zooming.

I can’t see any reason to scroll beyond the right or left edge of the map (lock them to the screen edge in that case).

The top and bottom are a little trickier because of the UI obstructions.

I think I need a few more levels just to see how much of an issue it really is 🙂

      1. Koker93
        Koker93 October 4, 2013 at 10:38 am |

At one point the scrolling was limited to the edge of the map – that was a lot more annoying when you were trying to concentrate on an edge or corner of the map and couldn’t center it. Believe me, its better this way.

Having discovered these gems on kongregate, I think that this demo is too short and too easy. I could be a bit too experienced and too used to mass onslaught from CW2 user missions, though. Ideally the last mission should be somewhat hard. Some special demo levels could be nice to introduce more units, as well. You know how to make a good demos from the content of the distributed flash versions of the first two.

Apart form this, if possible, include the redistributable (C++) on 64 bit windows.

I never cared much for relays in CW, they seem very nice and less expensive here. I never cared for anti creeper in CW2, and the sprayers give hint of a good implementation of this.

Trying to open on OS X 10.8.5, double clicking app does absolutely nothing. OS X makes the typical “opening app” graphic and then nothing happens. Not seeing any activity on the Activity Monitor, either.

    Amazing! Just amazing!
I find just one kind of annoying thing: when you click and drag to build collectors or relays on a straight line, the game just ignore every tiny terrain obstacle and simply doesn’t build some collectors, leaving you no options but to manually fix every gap. Personally I don’t care much about how my collectors are well spreaded across the map. Since I have to pay attention to other things, (creeper & weapons) as long as they are connected to each other, for me they are just fine. My point is: wouldn’t it be cooler if clicking and dragging leaves you with a line of linked collectors and nothing more to worry about? Who cares if they are not exactly aligned or at the same distance! 😉
Everything else is great! You too are Great!
Make sure to put a demo on some Flash games sites like you did with the previous two! (Armorgames, Flashgames, etc…)
    That’s free advertising too!
Farewell! And sorry for the long comment! ^^”

      Istaro October 4, 2013 at 2:20 am |

Also, for those of us who do like to fuss about maximizing collector coverage, it would be a huge help if we could see the collection radii of under-construction collectors (perhaps only when in place-collector mode). In a future update, perhaps.

Anyway, loved the demo and am super excited for the full game!

And thanks for implementing my suggestion about making relay-connecting lines turn purple during energy starvation! 😀

        Koker93 October 4, 2013 at 10:40 am |

The collectors used to do that in an early beta version. It was really annoying and if memory serves even hurt performance for a second while you were moving the collectors around. Believe me, its better this way.

Minor issue: when demo missions are finished, I get a screen with “Don’t delay, the fate of our universe is in y***” and the rest is censored out by the “Continue the journey” button. (On a 1680×1050 screen with 120 DPI font, XP SP3.) I don’t know where to report such problems.

On the other hand: I’m really happy early missions run without problems on my 6 year old notebook. 🙂

Quick question about the possibility of Steam support, virgilw. If the game doesn’t have Steam support on launch day, but gets it further down the line, would the people that bought a copy already automatically get a Steam key or would we need to purchase the game again through Steam if we wanted the Steam version?

At first my only complaint was that the audio was very crackly. But I just shrugged and said: “I usually turn off the music in CW1 so I can do that in CW3. Still a great game so far.”

Then I finished the demo and started playing something else. A game I play often…and the audio is crackly. I’m SO relieved that the problem definitely seems to be my computer and NOT (let me repeat that: NOT) CW3. 😛

So now that the moment of CW3 is upon us, and we’ve all played the demo and confirmed that this is going to be a really fun game:

Thank you Virgil, both for making these great games and for making the effort to keep us in the loop and let us know what was happening throughout the development of CW3. (I will also be offering a second thank you shortly. It will be made of money.)

But now that we’re at the finish line, I have a question about this blog, the videos, the comments, etc. Where have our assorted cries and please fallen on the axis of annoying versus encouraging?

Wow +4 energy from a reactor on a power zone seems pretty powerful…

    1. steveman0
      steveman0 October 4, 2013 at 11:05 am |

I thought so too but that’s exactly what a power zone should make you think. Watching the preview videos and seeing early screenshots made the other functions of the power zone seem incredibly strong and I was worried things like the reactor, relay, and collector wouldn’t be worth putting on a power zone but it seems like it might be a tougher decision after all.

    raining_pianos October 4, 2013 at 12:29 am |

Let me also add a couple of constructive comments:

    1. Story dialogs need a keyboard shortcut for “Show Next” line. Space or Arrow Right is the most common in games I suppose, and I was really surpised to find out it’s not working here.

    2. Score submitting would benefit immensely from highlighting my username and autoscrolling to it after I click Submit. Right now it’s rather inconvenient to find out how did you fare after completing a mission, I have to memorize my score and scroll manually until I find my name. It would be even better if my score rank (in all-time range) was shown near the “Score submitted” line in the upper box on that screen.
I think this is the most important fix from this post, because it’ll make the competitive aspect of the game more prominent (of course if that’s what you wanted).

    3. I couldn’t find key binding to select Command Node from Orbital tab. Intuitively I tried Alpha 1 as in all the other tabs, but no such luck. Seems to be inconsistent with your great keyboard support for unit building.

    4. If I click’n’drag to build several towers at once and then decide to cancel the action (Space or Escape), only the first semitransparent image of a tower disappears, but all the others remain. Looks a bit confusing.

    5. I agree with Parmeisan about having a button right on the playfield to leave world (without warning) after you won and decided to keep playing.

  92. Worsh
    Worsh October 4, 2013 at 10:01 am |

Just a couple of things, based on the demo…

First, you’ve got the text “50 thousand” somewhere (I think in the opening text; haven’t found a way to reset the demo to doublecheck). I think it would look far better as either “50.000” or “fifty thousand”.

Second, the connection lines are hidden by “creeper smoke” (the stuff that appears when creeper is destroyed). This can make it hard to know if a weapon will be powered or not if you need to put them behind enemy lines.

Third, the game isn’t out yet 🙁

    Hi virgilw
I have a problem running the demo in iOS 10.9: When I go to ‘Arc Eternal’ section the only thing I see is the background so I get stuck at that screen and there is no way of playing the demo.
Just though about reporting this issue, the game looks great though.
    Thanks.
