Hmm.. So pyramids extend far beyond (or is that closer to the dawn of?) humanity? Not exactly a lost art form then.

Oh, and the subtle pun in your text is noted and appreciated.

        I found the pun… it’s subtle, but very good…….
I wont spoil it tho, so I can’t tell you… it’s more fun to discover it on your own 🙂

Yes, I’m easily amused… can you tell?

Yeah I noticed it but forgot to reply to say that I found it. There is no bold because the words are camouflaged.

There’s a… River, in the middle… Pretty useful flooded with AC to control the creeper advance. I may have a good strategy to work this map now. Can’t wait to test it

nope. Its probably a recorded message. I saw it when knucklecracker was demoing the first few missions. Anyways glad to get a status update, hope to buy the game when it comes out.

That’s a Inhibitor I think, if you kill the inhibitor you win the map, it doesn’t eject AC.

        5. Hoodwink
          Hoodwink August 27, 2013 at 5:12 am |

I think an AC emitter there would be drowned out by the inhibitor. 😀

They may be ways to obtain anticreeper and therefore ore on this map…

Concur completely, I came hoping for a video or for a release date, but I know deep inside that those will come when the game is ready and not a secon before.

It keeps getting better and better, and as Virgilw expressed, it is as close to art as any other artistic expression.

Brad of war August 26, 2013 at 1:37 pm |

Keep up THE work virgilw 😉 anyway i think its a good idea to ad some gravity like in cw 2 . And im thinking of something like playing it online ? Co-op or somthing isnt That a good idea ? Please respond someone that works for or with virgilw?

    1. Koker93
      Koker93 August 26, 2013 at 4:23 pm |

The idea of online play has been brought up about a gillion times. Virgil is pretty much a one man show and does not have the resources and/or desire to make a co op or head to head mode for creeper world. Sorry man, I think it would be awesome too.

      1. JF-T
        JF-T August 26, 2013 at 7:41 pm |

Depending on how mod-friendly the game is with CRPL, I don’t doubt Co-Op could happen eventually one day. It would be possible for Co-Op wth the individual command nodes but honestly it would be very hectic and each player would have to be on unconnectable networks, otherwise they would share energy collection and output and it would just get frustrating if not SUPER complicated.

But Co-Op could add a nice teamwork element to the game. IF i wanted any kind of a multiplayer element to the game, it would be best to start out with Co-Op since you wouldn’t have to worry about balancing titans in regards to other enemy players, which can take years for a complicated game since you’d also still have to balance and keep it fair vs Creeper.

Super duper complicated I imagine very well. Virgil would need some help I would think to implement something like that.

          Cmdrd August 28, 2013 at 12:54 am |

I don’t think co-op would be terribly difficult to do as a player, but a lot more complicated for Virgil. Case in point, Planetary Annihilation is set up so that if you are on the same team, you share an economy. As long as you are in constant communication with team members, it makes it incredibly efficient. Also, in large scale environments where you are fighting on multiple fronts and have to worry about an economy, having a couple of well-coordinated individuals allows you to operate at maximum efficiency.

Just my 2 cents coming from playing an RTS where this is done.

Keep up the great work Virgil, checking back here multiple times a day to see if it’s done! I know you’re doing this for yourself first, so you’re the one who has to be happy with it when it’s done.

    2. Sander Bouwhuis
      Sander Bouwhuis August 28, 2013 at 4:01 am |

It would be awesome if there was co-op in the sense that you simply both share the screen. So, you are basically using 2 mouse cursors to control the same units and resources and buildings and such.

Years ago I played Command and conquer with a friend where we both controlled the same faction. I basically focused on the base and resources and building units, while he did the micro-management attacking with the units.

I hope I explained it so that it’s clear what I mean.

    WHERE ARE THE BOLD WORDS?!?!?

Also, looking good. Making a game that YOU want to play is the key to keeping us happy. If you try to please others, you won’t get it right. IF you just try to make a good game, you’ll do so, just have you have done with CW1 & 2. Looks great Virgil. How did he get the terrain to be a different color without elevation change? Hmm…

Anyway, I will be checking back every day for the release. Possibly every hour. Or minute. Or second. Or…

Now, those things on the tops of the pyramids. If you look close, the walls make it look like a cannon. It could be a power source, or pretty much anything. Looks like a pretty hard mission. The flat terrain would make it easy to advance, but the creeper can too. And no ore, so no anti creeper. A challenge. Just the sort of mission I like.

Still hoping on the Alpha and Beta missions! I want to try Dungeon Novice, among others.

“I don’t make these games for the fans… I make them for me”

I can relate to that, not in game making, be in making maps for games, particularly Starcraft 2. I only like to make things that I would enjoy playing, and that haven’t already been made. Sometimes people will make suggestions like, add X. When X would essentially make it a different map that already exists.

Of course I don’t have the huge amount of fans to worry about, that you do, haha. 🙂

“final mission as I type this (well before and after I type this)”
So we can be fairly sure that Virgil only has two arms…

I don’t see how engineers can compare themselves to artists and vice versa. Artists are all about feelings and emotions. Engineers are borderline sociopathic and take awesome stuff to make it more awesome. I’m sorry, Michelangelo, I can’t hear you over the sound of my SPACESHIP! With LASERS!

And most importantly: WOO! Status update! I wonder if the new fancy things on top of the pyramids are artifacts (like from the first game, replaced by holocubes in the second) or something else? Not tech, I wouldn’t think. Orbitals would probably be marked. No idea, honestly.

Unrelated: Firefox is awesome. The power surged in the middle of typing this, and I rebooted and everything was how I left it.

It doesn’t really matter because Virgilw is an artist 2.0 in my eyes! 😀
The whole blabber about artist and engineer was slightly inspirational to me. Virgilw, when you finish the game, I want you to enjoy a day at 6 flags, come home, and order pizza hut. You deserve it for such a great peice of “art”!
I’ll let you in on a little secret. Today, I was asked to write down the first 5 games that came to mind. I wrote this game on slot number one 😀

    4. Nathan
      Nathan August 27, 2013 at 9:28 am |

I disagree with you. Engineering itself can be a form of art. By creating something out of nothing, by solving a problem that maybe others haven’t even realized was a problem that could be solved, by using creativity and ingenuity, the engineer creates a masterpiece. A carefully engineered and elegant solution is no less beautiful, inspiring or wondrous to behold than a symphony or beautiful tapestry. It’s true there are some people who are maybe more inclined to expressing themselves via certain forms of art, whether it be painting or building an electric circuit, they are all bound under the same common denominator. So yes, they can compare one another to each other.

I believe that I asked this before, but I’m too lazy to go crawling through the old posts. PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE WITH ICE CREAM ON TOP can you make a way to remove those green walls after you fend off the creeper? I cannot tell you the number of times in CW1 that my perfect collectornet would be screwed up by a leftover blue brick thing, but I can tell you it is in the THOUSANDS. Like I said, I may have posed this question/idea before, so don’t murder me. One way that I’d think would be a balanced way would be having the ability to destroy them with terps, but at a VERY high cost in energy/time per block.

          1. Relli
            Relli August 29, 2013 at 3:16 pm |

I’ve given it some thought, and I can’t figure out how removing creeper-blocking walls could make the game easier, rather than harder. I suppose a map could exist where the walls were designed to prevent you from building in certain places, but then you could use those pink walls, or something. If those still exist.

While I’m on the subject, it’d be useful to make those green walls clickable, to view current and max health. The button to destroy them could be accessed that way too. Win/Win.

            1. Gecko252
              Gecko252 August 29, 2013 at 8:03 pm |

Pink walls are just annoying. sure they cant be destroyed but that makes things easy for you and not the creeper. I think there should be a third wall that can be destroyed by creeper and terraformers. I think that would solve a lot of these problems and would be friggen awesome.

            2. Katra
              Katra August 29, 2013 at 9:52 pm |

The walls keep creeper and weapons separated. Sometimes removing a wall would make it easier to kill the creeper. i could also see walls keeping creeper ponds on ground you wanted where draining the pond into handy low ground you don’t need would be useful. (or possibly allowing leftover AC from taking a hill to flow into a valley to help you clear the valley.)

              1. Relli
                Relli August 30, 2013 at 9:10 am |

Yeah, that all makes sense. Though it would still be awesome to be able to check their health.

              Th3Ch053n0n3 August 31, 2013 at 2:51 pm |

I second the idea of the clickable walls, but i still feel that they should be destroyable because they get in the way after you’ve cleared the area of creeper.

              1. sweetdude64
                sweetdude64 September 4, 2013 at 9:35 pm |

About the whole wall concept- I think walls should be a clickable. I also think some experimenting with upgrades may be nice. Maybe quicker repair time? I don’t think that would really be great in the actual game, unfortunately.

I believe Virgil said something along the lines of: I will continue to make CW games as long as the creeper needs to be fought. This hints at future CW games but who knows? Maybe you defeat the Loki once and for all in this game.

He’s done the XY plane, then the XZ, and now the XY again. I think CW4 should be XYZ (3D). =P

And for those on other parts of the planet, feel free to swap Z and Y or however else you decide to orientate your planes. =P

      1. Sander Bouwhuis
        Sander Bouwhuis August 28, 2013 at 4:08 am |

        Noooooooooooooooo! Please not 3D!

The fact that you can see all of the terrain in one glance means that you can play it tactically and strategically. If you change to 3D then because of Z-occlusion, you would have to ‘run’ around to see everything.

Now, isometric 3D (2.5D) could work very well. But, it already is more or less like that.

Iso-3D would be great for creeper world 4, unless its fully 3d, like Tower Raiders 3. You should check out the Tower Raiders games if you like tower defence. They are pretty cool.

Back on topic, Iso-3D would work well for CW4. Maybe with terrain generation like in Railroad Tycoon 2, with mountains and valleys done in shadow.

    wanttoseee August 27, 2013 at 12:59 pm |

That’s totally no secret! I think most of us already knew that. That’s part of why the creeper saga is so fun and awesome! There’s something special about any work made like that. Best way I can describe it, is as having a “glitter” inside it; something you can’t see but feel. Unique works of art and cult classics have it, and these games certainly have it too. Creative impulse + Engineering skills + Imaginative vision + V = Creeper apocalypses and sweet unique games! And the “bad part” sounds like the good part to me. I want to play the game when it’s at V’s happy place because that’s the point at which the games are there best!

AlexMVW10, you can probably replace the keyboard. Try Youtube’ing your laptop modal + keyboard replacement, there might be a tutorial. However, I would recommend getting a wireless keyboard and using that instead- would be cheaper and a lot easier. USB corded keyboard would work too if you have one laying around.

My laptop kept typing oooooooooooooo without stopping, and had keys not working. I got a wireless keyboard and that got me around the broken keys. Had to take the keyboard out and stab the “O” key with a knife to get the ooooooo’s to stop; was a “fun” time. (note: stabbing keyboard only encouraged if keys type endlessly on there own)

I really like CW, and replaying the first one these day, there is something i really like to see : cylinders and toric maps.
some exmplaination : a cylinder map is a map where east and west are connected (think CIV V for exemple), a toric (or dougnut) map is a cylinder map where north is also connected to south.

I think is something very important (but i fear very difficult, so if it’s not already done, it won’t be for CW 3) for the overwhelming effects.

When playing a standard map all the borders of the map acts as wall against Creeper, in a toric (or spherical) map, you are really in the middle of the action.

I’ve seen the circular map (with the sun), and i think it is a start but once again, the border of the disk will protect you

Pong can be copied in under a day in C++. I assume. I’m not a programmer. But the original game only had like a hundred transistors. It’s not public domain yet, but it’s such a basic thing that it really might as well be. As long as you don’t make money off it, you should be fine.

They will remain separate games, but CW3 will combine mechanics from both games giving the player an unique and ultimate CW experience, so if you just want the gameplay the CW3 will most likely be the best, but if you want some nostalgia and story then you should get the first two.

I think at some point Virgil mentioned there’d probably by some kind of “save X dollars by buying all three as a package” kind of deal.

Which implies there will be some kind of deal, but you won’t automatically get 1 and 2 for free with 3.

I think the post works just as well without the bits I assume you put between angle brackets. Then it’s more a subtle hint at the end that it was a jedi mind-trick, and that gives a greater “Aha!” moment as you look back over the post with that new bit of info in mind, plus the satisfaction of ‘getting the reference’ just from the “These are not the droids you are looking for”

Though seeing some things here and there go down in the comment section over the past few months, you were probably right to make it blatantly clear you were joking.

I have to ask, has there been a set back? This may be my fault but I assumed (and you know what they say about that), with your last post that the release was coming very soon. I took, ‘I am working on the final stages of the final mission as I type this…” as it would be a few more days. Obviously that is MY time frame and have no idea what your time frame was so in that regard, I was wrong…

There are many things that probably have to be done before you release but I was wondering since it has now been two weeks since that date if things are rolling along or have they hit a snag… I check this website (like others I imagine) daily hoping it will ask for my money so I can download your new game. I am just wondering if we are looking at a few more weeks?

How long does it usually take to rlease the game after you are finished? I cant imagine with one click of the button, it can be instantly buyable to every computer across the globe.

Actually aside form the traffic crashing the site I would guess this is exactly what the release will be like.

STOP OR I’LL COME IN TO YOUR HOUSE WITH A RIOT OF FANS AND KILL WHAT CREDITS YOU HAVE ALREADY!

No I wouldn’t actually do that, we could set the game back days, MAYBE even months. xD

Not gonna lie, I have tried changing the URL to take me to the CW3 page, but I’m getting 404 errors. I guess it doesn’t exist yet.

This blog has become what Creeper World 3 is, for me. Creeper World 3 is about coming to this site, hoping for some dribble of information… There is a sense of hope that something momentous might happen, but the idea of the game actually coming out and my actually playing it has become strange and alien.

I agree, personally I already lost hope that he is going to release the game anytime this year, so whatever. Why did he have to tease everyone saying how soon the release is, 3 months ago, I don’t know.

Nice work, but, I was wandering if you have any plans of releasing it on androids / ios or given any though of it.

I’m sure of my galaxy s4 is big enough and powerful enough to be play on.
    Or any other tablet.

      sweetdude64 September 14, 2013 at 4:14 pm |

A tablet does seem like a reasonable size, but as Virgilw has already stated, its not happening anytime soon IF at all.

I was thinking about this and I would love to see this too. Given that it is in the Unity engine it wouldn’t be impossible but I’d still consider it a stretch given the complexities of the game and adapting an interface that works. Although it has been stated to be far more efficient I still wonder how stressful it would be even on modern devices. That said I’d still pay for a version that was limited to maps no larger than the original CW.

First – your S4 is a sweet phone, but it is neither large enough or powerful enough to run CW3. This coming from a Note 2 owner and beta tester. It just wouldn’t really work. CW3 maps can be, and often are, a LOT larger than CW1 or 2.

Second – there wouldn’t be a good way to support most of the in game controls on a touch screen, other than using up a lot of that precious screen space.

Don’t mean to step on your hopes, I would also love to play it on my phone. Virgil has talked about this in the forums in the past and the challenges are a little too steep for a mobile version.

        steveman0 September 15, 2013 at 10:01 am |

I think you are jumping the gun a bit. CW3 maps can be a lot larger but they wouldn’t have to be for a mobile version. Besides the nature of the platform makes it rather likely to be cumbersome to have such large maps.

I bet that it could run on mobile platforms. Mobile devices these days are more powerful than many realize given that what most usually see is the device running in low power mode where the processor is well underclocked which is usually 95% of the time in use. At full power they can do quite a lot but kill the battery fast.

The mobile version clearly wouldn’t be a straight port. It would require a lot of work to make it playable and if it was particularly heavy on somewhat older devices some processing power could be saved by cutting back the creeper calculations to something a little closer to the rate in the original CW. The interface problems could be solved (I’d envision pop-open and drag style interface similar to radial menus) as well but would also require dedicated work to make it happen.

I’d imagine the lack of interest in a mobile version probably has more to do with the struggles of the UI design and implementation than anything. I hear that can be a real pain and I don’t know what Virgil’s experience is in that area.

im mostly talking about adding creeper world 1 as in that one out for ages and doesn’t take much requirments to run on pc

        Omegatron September 15, 2013 at 1:41 pm |

I think the S4 is more powerful (or at least as powerful) as my desktop (which can run CW1 and 2 fine).

To leap off of this thought:
Virgil, should someone (this is hypothetical, i’m not saying me!) chose to try and bring creeper world to the mobile world, would you be willing to give out source code for someone else to try and develop the app/port? would you even want someone to do develop an app/port for CW? Also, what about like open source type projects for other platforms (xbox, playstation, ect.)? I dunno, just wondering on your view on this type of stuff.

Make a much smaller CW for the phone. I don’t think anyone would care if it wasn’t as huge. Sell it for a couple bucks.

      Ninjadude501 September 15, 2013 at 3:45 pm |

Or perhaps a whole different game in the CW series. Something like ‘CW Mobile’ or something. Like, Virgil could make CW4 be exclusively mobile, since pretty much everyone has SOME sort of mobile device these days. And of course, it would be pretty small scale. But it could work.

        cooltv27 September 15, 2013 at 10:23 pm |

if virgil makes cw 4 exclusively mobile, ill, stop caring about cw and un-bookmark knuckle cracker in .5 seconds. and I dont have ANY mobile device and I know lots of people who also dont.

I thought Knuckle cracker had a large team though.
        Leader – Virgil
        CEO – Virgil
        CFO – Virgil
All sound designers and game designers – Virgil.
With that huge team we could achieve everything.
