Looks like the ore got a visual update, too.
I wonder how large this map is, because it looks like there are 2 Bertha targets, but no structures in sight.
It’s amusing to see where there’s an area that’s “suggested” as a landing area for the CN, but you like placing them in other locations.
Are these “suggestions” good places to start, or are do you place them kinda arbitrarily?
Realizing that the previous sentence could sound harsh, I expect that there is some playing around with where it’s placed, so that the creeper doesn’t just flood it immediately.
My question is more-so directed to the areas that it’s not going to be quite so quickly.

So I am assuming that you have to beat a few worlds to be able to travel to the Inhibitor planet?
I like the idea of organizing missions into star systems. Makes for a more interesting game.
Keep up the good work Virgil!

Do you plan to make some maps harder by either changing strenght of creeper or reducing strenght of weapons?

It would be cool to have some maps that are simple in design but hard to play.

Maybe afer finishing campain an insane mode or mode that you get less energy from colector/reactor or where the cost is doubled ie you get less ammo for each packet.

Do you accept human sacrifices for alpha/beta access? I will give you my firstborn child. *clears throat, looks around innocently* I like this. Instead of a linear campaign, you have the potential for a few missions to start with, a dozen to do in any order, and then a linear endgame system/world. That was one of the best parts of Mass Effect 2, in my opinion, and it would have been even better if the game could have fit on a single disc. All ten recruitment and ten loyalty missions, and then the suicide mission. My only request is that you get rid of the one pixel gap on the menu between the cancel and leave world buttons and the far right of the unit build menu. OCD, you know?

If we need to destroy these fellas to get across the galaxy will this mean we may also see some wormholes, to travel long distances(otherwise it get’s tedious) and maybe creeper ‘homeworld’ with particularly devastating destructive capacity?

  30. ShadowDragon7015
    ShadowDragon7015 February 26, 2013 at 9:40 am |

It would be kind of cool to have a setting so you could customize the colors on the units, like changing the blue on the CN to red, green, purple, orange, or yellow.

  31. 4xC
    4xC February 26, 2013 at 9:49 am |

When I looked closer at the pic, I noticed that NNW of the inhibitor is an ore deposite that looks like HALF of a deposite in the sense that it is as long as a regular deposite but not as wide. What is up with that?

And why, if it is so, are the structures in different sizes (compare the space taken by collectors and reactors for example)?

    1. 4xC
      4xC February 26, 2013 at 9:50 am |

I meant “deposit” obviously. Ought to be a spell-check on these posting software programs sometime.

    2. flabbyflag
      flabbyflag March 1, 2013 at 12:51 pm |

It looks like that because it dosen’t produce ore quite as fast as other ‘full’ deposits, so you would get less ore over time.

      1. 4xC
        4xC March 1, 2013 at 8:08 pm |

“less ore over time”. Are you telling me that they are no longer infinite? Or do you mean that they are still infinite, but JUST slower?

        1. hoodwink
          hoodwink March 2, 2013 at 4:51 am |

        2. Lurkily
          Lurkily March 2, 2013 at 5:35 pm |

I think Flabbyflag is making estimations based on observations, so you probably have the same sources he does.

V has said that he favors a rate-based AC economy, though, so I would expect AC deposits to be rate-limited but infinite.

          1. Zach
            Zach March 5, 2013 at 7:46 pm |

I want it to be semi-rate limited. like CW2, but much more rate limited, but there SHOULD be at least an option for a finite amount in them.

            1. Lurkily
              Lurkily March 9, 2013 at 8:55 pm |

Not sure I see the advantage in limiting certain types of gameplay. I think one of CW’s strongest suits is that it’s a game that can largely be played the way the player dang well wants to play it.

  33. Koker93

Question about game mechanics – If there is a full guppy parked next to a blaster that is also physically connected to the ship what supplies the packets? The guppy or the ship? Sounds like a way to shortcut the path of packets to the front line…if the packets come from whatever is closer instead of favoring your ship.

    1. JTaylor
      JTaylor February 26, 2013 at 8:51 pm |

It appears that packets are delivered from the closest source.
So if your guppy is closer than the CN, it will supply packets until it’s empty.
Once it’s empty, it will fly back to its pad and the CN will dispatch packets to your blaster until the guppy returns. (assuming there’s no other nearby sources)

  34. Story Time
    Story Time February 27, 2013 at 9:16 am |

Too many are too impatient. What a shame.

My voice is one that asks for the best game possible. Rush is counter-productive to quality. The best choice, in my opinion, is for Virgil to make the game that he will be satisfied with.

Thank you very much for the up-dates. I am still impressed.

  35. 4xC
    4xC February 27, 2013 at 9:18 am |

Suppose you decide to destroy a guppy for whatever reason. How could you use the supplies the guppy or pad is carrying before destroying it if possible? It is confusing because there does not seem to be a “disconnect” button.

One more thing, have you considered adding a mini-map to the game?

    1. ShadowDragon7015
      ShadowDragon7015 February 27, 2013 at 9:35 am |

Could it be possible for the packets the guppy was charging to just be sent back to the CN? If the guppy was destroyed.

Videos take me a day to create. I have to make a mission, play it, then play it to record it, then encode and upload the video, then…. I’ve just been too busy to take a day to do that since I’ve been trying to get the game finished.

That’s ok, we’ll certainly wait a day for a video rather than 3 weeks for a screenshot 😀

    1. Lurkily
      Lurkily March 1, 2013 at 6:46 pm |

Personally, I’d rather see development of CW3 advanced by a day’s work, than a snazzy video. I’m more interested in getting my hands on the final product than I am in seeing more detailed ‘dev diaries’.

I agree entirely with you. I much rather wait for the finished product, and get it quicker, than be delayed by small breadcrumbs. I don’t need more videos to buy the game, hell, just seeing that 1 screenshot gets me to want to buy it!

      3. Koker93
        Koker93 March 2, 2013 at 11:11 am |

Assuming they are all active there are 52 beta testers. You are one of them Lurkily. It rings a little hollow when a beta tester says he is more interested in the final product than a dev video. You are not waiting for anything. On the other hand the only time I get to see the game is here, and videos are obviously a lot better than pictures. This level to get the picture was obviously played – by one of 53 people with access to the game. Why not record what went on up to here and post the video?

I’m happy to wait too Virgil. I also want a great game as soon as possible. But the breadcrumbs you leave out in the form of videos make the wait a whole lot easier!

        1. Lurkily
          Lurkily March 2, 2013 at 5:45 pm |

Even V does not have the final product that we’re all waiting on. Though I do see where you are coming from.

    Lol flabby that’s a great perspective 😀
My stand point on the cursing is it lye’s where it falls. Cursing can be tolerable if not used innapropriate such as
That *$% guy *^(%( ^%* %^(%( ^%!!! Instead of that jerk gave all our freakin’ water away! Or something simular to it.
I don’t really mind the cursing, however. As long as it doesn’t offend anybody, and it enhances it more than any other word, it should be acceptable.

    1. flabbyflag
      flabbyflag March 8, 2013 at 3:50 pm |

There is a bigger audience than the people on the blog and forums. I’m sure that if there is cursing in game, than a group will be genuinely offended.
My parents have an anti swearing approach to life. So if there is profanity in the game, than it would be hard for me to get my hands on it.

      Lurkily March 9, 2013 at 9:01 pm |

Meh . . . I see very few circumstances where cursing actually enhances the impact of any phrase. The only call I see for vulgarity is in entertainment, where you portray a character that is vulgar.

Even my own sparse uses of vulgarity in my personal interactions are things that I often look back on and wish I could rephrase. Despite portraying emphasis, they often weaken the point that I was trying to make.

I think “Land” should be a resource if you know what I mean. I think that instead of just… creating walls out of no were… is not very realistic, I think you should be able to fill the Terps with like 10-20 blocks or so, and have a designation for were you will take the dirt from, but obviously have a Terp there to suck it all up. Just a suggestion, but I think that this will be a great addition, and add perhaps more difficulty?

        Lurkily March 12, 2013 at 9:14 am |

I can see that easily . . . you can only give a player so much to manage before you begin risking information overload.

  52. sweetdude64
    sweetdude64 March 7, 2013 at 7:36 pm |

Saneman- If he were to do that, how would PZ terps work?

I do, however, think there should be another resource. In CW1 virgilw had energy, Cw2 he added in ore, CW3 adds in ?????

    1. hoodwink
      hoodwink March 8, 2013 at 8:57 am |

He adds in Aether, so far. 😀

      1. 4xC
        4xC March 9, 2013 at 1:06 am |

Saying Aether is a resource is frankly no different than saying technytes were resources. But it makes sense either way. RTS games do well when they have at least 3 limiting factors in military production.

        1. Lurkily
          Lurkily March 12, 2013 at 9:17 am |

          Technytes WERE a resource.

That being said, you’re suggesting we have enough resources to manage already? Energy, Ore, Aether? Most RTS’s I know have only two very obvious resources, like Total Annihilation’s energy and metal. If you look closely, though, there are usually at least five or six factors that could be called a resource that are directly tied to overall military progress.

    2. Lurkily
      Lurkily March 9, 2013 at 9:04 pm |

      . . . . . . . aether?

Seriously, though, you can only add so many resources before you begin overburdening a casual player with information and management tasks.

Especially the comments become more easily readable. Good job on this 🙂

    1. Lurkily
      Lurkily March 9, 2013 at 9:08 pm |

Agreed – it’s easier now to tell what comments reply to what. It’s clean, but needs some tweaking. I’d eliminate the spacing between threads, change the background to pure white, blending with the posting background, to start with . . . beyond that I’d have to tinker to offer any more useful feedback.

      1. 4xC
        4xC March 10, 2013 at 12:33 am |

Frankly, I wish the post numbers still stayed. (In the sense that the old layout had the numbers of which post was posted in order next to each one).

I do agree that the reply thing is better and I like the way time is posted in each head.

but “your comment is awaiting moderation” should have stayed highlighted in red.

I just wanted to say something about how you sell your games. You should take a page from the makers of Minecraft. I have both the 1st and 2nd game and I keep back ups on an external drive but if my computer dies and my external gets wiped than I have to buy your games again? That really sucks. I love how Minecraft lets me login and download the game. This will be great when I get my new computer. I just wish that you would do something like this.

  63. Adahus
    Adahus March 12, 2013 at 12:35 am |

    Virgil,
Very much looking forward to CW3.
I often play CW3 with self-imposed rules that I can’t use certain types of weapon/collector/etc or only limited numbers of them.
It brings more richness and allows getting more out of each map. e.g. playing a map with only blasters or only mortars has a very different feel. This sort of thing could be built into the game. Perhaps you could even make certain technologies sometimes “die” until you find a certain repair artefact – this done at a crucial moment can add drama to a scenario?

    1. Koker93
      Koker93 March 12, 2013 at 11:58 am |

Adahus – all of the things you describe are already built into CW2. They are in the map editor and are implemented on a LOT of custom maps. In face one of map makers favorite things to do when they limit a player is turn off weapon types, or only allow a certain amount of a weapon type. I’ve even played a few where the number of reactors is limited so you can only fight so hard/fast. Go check out the custom maps, there are around 2075 of them…

        DestinyAtlantis(The Lord of Darkness) March 12, 2013 at 12:58 pm |

By *certain technologies sometimes “die” until you find a certain repair artefact* he meant in the campaign/galactic conquest(where you go between multiple planets in multiple star systems and if you are stuck, you go somewhere else, get another tech, then come back and play the map with that technology), you lose a technology until you find a place/artefact to repair that type of tech(or at least that is how i understand it).

    sweetdude 64 March 13, 2013 at 4:54 pm |

I am sure virgilw will edit the layout of the blog some more after the heat is less dense around CW3. I, personally, liked the: comment #’s, Virgilws comments being highlighted in blue, the red text saying your comment is awaiting moderation.
What I like about this one is: background is somewhat better and the space seperating the differant threads (I think it much more clean and easier to read, why do you, Lurkily, not like this addition?)
What I would change is: Black background where the daimond areas are only, and add back the benifits of the earlier version.

  65. sweetdude 64
    sweetdude 64 March 13, 2013 at 5:02 pm |

Here are some changes to CW3 I would like to present (Notice how the space seperates the ideas, and how a replier could respond to either comment.)
I think that if they would go to differant worlds to get tech to beat other worlds, it would be like a jigsaw puzzle. I someone was to do this, I would expand the jigsaw puzzle in custom/special missions. I would make it to where the tech only gave you one. This would bring in more use for the orbital tab (or whatever the concept for this would be) Other worlds can have that same tech, or another tech.

Anyways, who does your concept art, virgilw?

    1. DaMetaEX
      DaMetaEX March 13, 2013 at 8:59 pm |

I dont think that is concept art. Concept art is done in completely diffrent type of look where the images look like IN-GAME graphics which is amazing on how the images look alot better than CW 1 or CW2 ever looked i personally like it. If you want to a concept art i will be willing to try to show you what i mean with it

    2. Gecko252
      Gecko252 March 13, 2013 at 11:09 pm |

All of the ending credits are him so I be-leave that it is all him.

I think that the whole jigsaw puzzle thing would give the game a more interesting approach but also making it quite complicated to add all in one game. He still has to come put with other games right? So leave some for the next ones, so we can play creeper world FOREVER!!!

    3. Molay
      Molay March 14, 2013 at 2:31 am |

I hope such a thing can be created with the map editor.

Virgil, does the map editor support the creation of custom campaigns, similar to the original campaign? A series of custom made maps that span a whole star system, galaxies? This would be a great thing 🙂

  69. anon
    anon March 16, 2013 at 2:45 pm |

Did you know that I am great at forgetting things? I have meant to ask this question for a while: what kind of processing power and RAM does your computer have, Virgil and alpha testers? At what point does stuff start to lag considerably? I have 8 GB RAM @ 1066 mHz, a 2400 mHz dual core AMD Turion processor, and a built in ATI Radeon 4200 graphics card @ 400 mHz with 3 GB RAM (or something – I’m not sure if it’s partitioned from the main RAM, if it’s shared and that’s the limit, or if it’s built in on the card). At a 640×480 window size, when does the framerate noticeably decrease?

    1. Michionlion
      Michionlion March 17, 2013 at 5:51 pm |

Almost never. The only real performance decrease is when you have a bunch of runners running around – I got to around 15000 before I went below 15 fps.

      1. anon
        anon March 17, 2013 at 6:46 pm |

15000 Runners?! Holy POOP! I think there was a cap on drones in CW2 – only 200 IIRC and Phantoms never spawned if they capped out either.

What happens if you put a nullifire on a power zone in range of an emitter?

    1. hoodwink
      hoodwink March 17, 2013 at 12:25 pm |

Then you get to take out said emitter very easily.
(This is why putting lots of enemy structures in the same place will actually be quite easy to beat, once you get to them.)

        2. sweetdude64
          sweetdude64 March 17, 2013 at 5:57 pm |

Not necessarily; If you place a nullifier on a power zone, it leaves no room for a weapon. If you place a mortar on the power zone instead, you would be able to cap the emmiter (most likely)
I suppose it depends on the situation.
